A prelude to Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse, which follows Yui Takamura and her friends during her time as surface pilot cadets.
STORY
Kyoto, 1997. The capital of the Japanese Empire.
As the cherry blossoms fall in spring, Yui Takamura enters
Yamayuri Girls' Surface Pilot Academy as a new cadet.
With the pride of a surface pilot in her heart,
Yui trains daily with her fellow students.
But there's one student in particular
that stands out to her above the rest... Kazusa Yamashiro.
Kazusa seems like everything that Yui wants to be,
and Yui feels a mixture of sympathy and envy towards her.
And then, in 1998, the fateful day comes...
The BETA finally land on the Japanese mainland,
advancing eastward with unstoppable force
and eventually reaching the outskirts of Kyoto.
Yui and her companions are called to the battlefield.

A surface pilot cadet at Yamayuri. She's the leader of her provisional squad, which includes Shimako and the other girls. The daughter of a high-ranking Fudai family, she takes the responsibilities that come with her rank extremely seriously, and is eager to graduate and become a full surface pilot as fast as possible. She’s proud of her family’s history as the Shogun’s weaponsmiths, and in particular of her father. She can’t wait for the day when she pilots the TSF her father designed on the battlefield.

A surface pilot cadet at Yamayuri. She has a cold and unapproachable air about her, and spends most of her time alone. Her family are lower-ranked Tozama samurai, but are known for being home to many famous officers and surface pilots, as well as successful businessmen. Yui, who is also from a samurai family and aiming to get into in the royal guard, greatly respects her.

A member of Yui’s squad. She’s been friends with Yui longer than anyone else at the school. They’re always together when they’re going to and from school, and during classes, but sometimes she acts like less of a friend and more of a subordinate.

A member of Yui’s squad. Cheerful upbeat and outgoing, and also sometimes a little too sarcastic for her own good. She keeps up the energy level in Yui’s squad, and is often at the center of whatever they’re talking about. She doesn’t pay attention in class, and can sometimes act like a less than stellar student, but she works hard when nobody’s looking. She has a strong obsession with the “Eight Minutes of Death”, and someone she wants to beat at any cost.

A member of Yui’s squad. She made it into Yamayuri, an extremely difficult school, but now she’s not sure she’ll actually be able to become a surface pilot. She has a fiancé in the royal guard, and often sends letters and talks to him on the phone, a fact which Aki teases her about to no end. Has a small locket with a picture of her fiancé that she treasures.

A member of the Takatsukasa clan, one of the five regent houses. She is a cousin of Senna, Yui's mother, and so she's known Yui since she was a little girl and treats her like a younger sister. Her nickname is "The Demon Princess", and Yui admires her greatly.

The commander of a squadron of freshly-commissioned surface pilots assigned to defend Arashiyama Base at all costs. She is the superior officer of Yui’s unit, and pilots a red Zuikaku that signifies her status as a member of a higher-ranking noble family.

A former Imperial Army surface pilot with a great deal of combat experience. He was wounded in the war on the continent and sent back to Japan, where he was assigned to serve as an instructor for the Royal Guard until he recovers. He serves as head instructor at Yamayuri. The horrors of battle that he experienced have made him into a merciless teacher, and the cadets call him the Tactical Surface Fiend.
